Debuting in Bergen County, the Table to Table I-Rescue App Facilitates Smaller Commercial Donations to Often Overlooked Community Partners

Table to Table, New Jersey’s first & only dedicated food rescue program, again makes history with the launch of its Table to Table I-Rescue App, initially offered exclusively in Bergen County.  Powered by the developer Food Rescue Hero, the app not only responds to the 10% increase in food insecurity witnessed by county residents since the start of the pandemic, but also prevents food wastage, benefiting the environment.

Download it today – IOS or Google Play

“During this pandemic, which has been especially devastating for people experiencing food insecurity, Table to Table has provided 39 million meals in Northern New Jersey through our larger commercial food donations,” said Ilene Isaacs, Table to Table’s Executive Director. “With the launch of the Table to Table I-Rescue App, we can feed more residents in need by leveraging smaller, commercial donations like those from restaurants, country clubs, and farmers markets which cannot efficiently be picked up by a truck so might otherwise go to waste. This food can then go to smaller agencies, such as group homes, that often get overlooked,” Isaacs concluded.

The Table to Table I-Rescue App matches smaller commercial food donors with a network of tireless Table to Table volunteers who pick up and deliver fresh, wholesome food to community-based agency partners, who can then identify local families in the greatest need. The list of agencies the app will benefit is growing.

“We are grateful to Bergen County and The Russell Berrie Foundation for funding that has enabled this program to launch in Bergen County,” said Julie Kinner, Director of Recipient Relations and Community Affairs. “With the help of our dedicated partners and volunteers, we’re hopeful to launch in additional counties in Northern New Jersey, where we can continue to make a meaningful impact in our community,” concluded Julie.

About Food Rescue Hero

Focusing on the logistical challenges of retail food recovery, Food Rescue Hero addresses problems through technology-coordinated, community-powered networks. Through the app, volunteer drivers are alerted when surplus food is available to be picked up near them. Since its launch in 2016, the app has redirected more than 11 million pounds of perfectly good food from landfills to the people who need it. Food Rescue Hero is based in Pittsburgh and now measurably impacts food insecurity in Cleveland, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Northern Virginia, Los Angeles, and Vancouver, B.C. In support of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals 2, 12 and 13, its goal is to scale food recovery in 100 cities by 2030.

Our Impact – The Video Version

I’m Gregory Mueller, the new Chairman of the Board for Table to Table. A year ago I would not have imagined that I would be the volunteer leader of this food rescue program that my family and I have supported over the past 10 years. But with the widespread economic and social disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and the related spike in need for food relief, the work of this organization has grown more critical.

The video you are about to see will give you a flavor of what we do and the scope of the need. I welcome you to join me, ensuring that our fleet of 7 refrigerated trucks continue to bring much needed fresh, nutritious food that without Table to Table would be wasted, to the more than 400,000 people who rely on our no-cost service each day. Although we have already exceeded our 2020 goal of 27 million meals by 42%, there remains demand beyond the 35 million delivered. Working together we can accomplish so much more.

On behalf of our team and our northern New Jersey community, we wish you and your family good health, peace and joy this holiday season.

Matriark Foods and Table to Table have been awarded a $50,000 grant to pilot a processing program that pays farmers, creates jobs, diverts vegetables from landfill, feeds the hungry, and proves out the metrics for nimble processing infrastructure.

Table to Table and Matriark Foods are excited to announce that they have been awarded a ReFED COVID-19 Food Waste Solutions Fund Grant to pilot Farmplus to People, an innovative partnership to upcycle farm surplus into a healthy, added-value vegetable stew for distribution to the hungry in New Jersey.

With the proceeds of the grant, Matriark Foods will purchase surplus vegetables from farmers and aggregators including AeroFarms and Bad Apple Produce, and process a nutritious vegetable stew that will be distributed to the hungry using Table to Table’s established logistics capability and large network of agencies in Bergen, Essex, Passaic and Hudson Counties in New Jersey. Fresh produce will also be sourced from Table to Table’s regular partners and distributed over 90 days. The project will deliver over 500,000 meals and offset over 1,000,000 lbs of Greenhouse Gases.

“The Covid19 pandemic has increased the challenges of accessibility and availability for much-needed fresh food, straining food system logistics of storage and distribution resulting in an increase in food waste at a time when so many are in need,” said Ilene Isaacs, Executive Director of Table to Table. “We are thrilled for the opportunity to partner with such extraordinary organizations who will help us provide an alternative source of nutritious produce. ReFED’s commitment to this project will have a significant impact on our ability to feed our hungry neighbors, while keeping a little less food from ending up in our landfills.”

Rescuing large amounts of farm produce for distribution to the hungry is a challenge due to the perishability of fresh vegetables . Some recipients of food donations, especially the elderly and the homeless, often have limited cooking capabilities and/or competencies. Table to Table and Matriark Foods seek to prove that by reallocating dollars to the direct purchase of surplus farm produce, processing it into nutritious products, and efficiently and directly distributing it to people, farmers can be properly paid, food kept from being wasted, people employed through production, and people fed nutritious, ready-to-eat food.

“The goal of the Table to Table|Matriark Foods public/private partnership pilot is to demonstrate that with the existence of more nimble food processing, massive amounts of food waste could be diverted from landfill while providing jobs, nutritious food for those who need it, and offsetting GHGs at scale,” states Anna Hammond, Founder and CEO of Matriark Foods. “We plan to optimize the use of the ReFED grant to inspire investment in scaling our model for the benefit of people and the environment.”

“We’re thrilled to collaborate with Matriark and Table to Table to divert high quality produce at risk of going to waste to those who need it most. In particular, we see enormous value in demonstrating a proof of concept for in-time processing of surplus produce, a development that has the potential to build capacity for a food waste reduction strategy that has remained elusive due to lack of nimble processing infrastructure.” Anya Ranganathan, Co-Founder, Bad Apple Produce

“AeroFarms is proud to partner with Table to Table and Matriark to help provide fresh, nutritious, delicious leafy greens and serve our communities struggling with food insecurity. As a Certified B Corporation, we are committed to helping increase access to fresh, healthy, great tasting food while minimizing food waste, a huge contributor to climate change.” Marc Oshima, Co-Founder & Chief Marketing Officer, AeroFarms

“COVID-19 has disrupted the regular flow of the food supply chain, making it difficult to get fresh, healthy food to the people who need it most and increasing the amount of food insecurity,” said Alexandria Coari, Capital and Innovation Director at ReFED, a national nonprofit working to advance solutions to reduce the amount of food waste. “The work of organizations like Table to Table and Matriark Foods is urgent, and we’re excited to get them the critical support they need from the ReFED COVID-19 Food Waste Solutions Fund.”

Support comes as part of Bank of America’s Neighborhood Builders program which empowers high performing nonprofits to address community challenges

Englewood Cliffs, NJ – February 7, 2017Table to Table had an exciting end to the year, as the food rescue program was named a Bank of America Neighborhood Builder for 2016. Through the Neighborhood Builders program, the bank provides nonprofits with a unique combination of leadership development, $200,000 in flexible funding, a network of peer organizations across the U.S. and the opportunity to access capital in order to expand their impact in the community.

As stated by Ilene Isaacs, Executive Director of Table to Table, “this Neighborhood Builders Award could not be timelier and there could be no better partner than Bank of America.  Through Neighborhood Builders, our organization will be given the opportunity to evolve strategically, creating an even stronger and more effective program.  Although our recently retired founder has laid the groundwork for continued success, there is still work to be done to transition and enhance skill sets while sustaining and growing the support of the community.  With a new database, improved IT capabilities and the addition of talented staff, our program will have the ability to reach maximum potential.  Everyone at Table to Table is committed to benefitting from every aspect of the program’s training and resources, enabling us to uphold our long term vow to be this area’s reliable source of fresh, nutritious food.”

Since 2004, through Neighborhood Builders, Bank of America has helped nonprofits create greater impact in their communities and better prepare for the future by providing the tools and resources they need to develop stronger strategic plans, chart a succession plan, navigate through tough economic times, and enhance their funding opportunities. This program is a signature demonstration of the bank’s work to address issues fundamental to economic mobility in order to build thriving communities and illustrates how strong cross-sector partnerships and local community leaders can play a meaningful role in positioning communities for success.  The awardees are selected by a local market selection committee with representation by local community leaders from diverse sectors.

Through at least three sessions, held around the country over the course of 2017, topics that present challenges to the nonprofit sector will be presented and discussed in formal and informal workshops. Leaders from all organizations who’ve received the award attend and benefit from networking, informal sharing of ideas and experiences, sharing from Neighborhood Builders Alumni and formal presentations such as access to capital, legacy planning, leadership development, and the nonprofit environment in current political climates.
