School Raises Enough Funds to Provide 52,860 Meals for Hungry NJ Neighbors

Hasbrouck Heights, NJ March 21, 2022 Table to Table, New Jersey’s first food rescue organization, recognizes the students at Cherry Hill Elementary School in River Edge, NJ with the 2021 Bernard and Geraldine Segal Foundation Award for Student Philanthropy in support of Table to Table’s ever-popular Bag a Lunch, Help a Bunch initiative, which invites participants to donate what they would spend on lunch for a day, week, month or more to help Table to Table feed those who need it most.

“Our hats go off to the amazing students at Cherry Hill Elementary School for raising enough funds to provide 52,860 meals to our hungry neighbors,” says Ilene Isaacs, Executive Director of Table to Table. “This is a true representation of student community leadership, and we’re thrilled to recognize their tremendous efforts with the 2021 Bernard and Geraldine Segal Foundation Award for Student Philanthropy,” Isaacs concluded.

Through the kindness of The Bernard and Geraldine Segal Foundation, a challenge grant of $30,000 among all Bag a Lunch, Help a Bunch participating schools in Northern NJ was established. Of the 41 schools that participated in 2021, Cherry Hill Elementary was the top fundraiser, raising enough to provide 52,680 meals. That number, along with the funds raised by the other schools, was generously doubled by the Bernard and Geraldine Segal Foundation.

“We are very proud of our students, faculty and administration for rallying behind Table to Table’s Bag a Lunch, Help a Bunch campaign to help eliminate food insecurity,” says Denise Heitman, Principal of Cherry Hill Elementary School.  “As a school, we have a long history of supporting those in need in our community, and it means so much to us to be acknowledged for our commitment,” Heitman concluded.

In honor of Black History Month, Table to Table, NJ’s first food rescue organization, salutes the many achievements and contributions of African Americans in history. In particular, we shine a light on a gentleman, who—without his genius—Table to Table would not be possible.

Born in 1893, Frederick McKinley Jones grew up to become the inventor of one of the most important inventions to modern agriculture: the refrigerated truck. His interest in mechanics and electricity began as a boy, and later, in 1940, Jones patented his refrigeration system, which allowed perishable foods to be shipped further distances and worldwide. In 1991, Frederick Jones was posthumously awarded the National Medal of Technology, becoming the first African American to receive the honor.

Committed to feeding our hungry neighbours in northern NJ, Table to Table—using a fleet of 6 refrigerated trucks —rescues and delivers healthy, fresh and perishable food from grocery stores, food distributors and restaurants, and in doing so, nourishes the community while helping our environment. Since our inception in 1999, Table to Table has rescued 191,750,000 pounds of food.

We are so grateful for the tireless work of Frederick McKinley Jones!

(Hasbrouck Heights, NJ   February 2, 2022) – Table to Table’s strong financial health and commitment to accountabilityand transparency haveearned it a 4-star rating from Charity Navigator, America’s largest independent charity evaluator.  This is the 12th consecutive time that Table to Table has earned this top distinction.

Since 2002, using objective analysis, Charity Navigator has awarded only the most fiscally responsible organizations a 4-star rating. In 2011, Charity Navigator added 17 metrics, focused on governance and ethical practices as well as measures of openness, to its ratings methodology.  These Accountability & Transparency metrics, which account for 50 percent of a charity’s overall rating, reveal which charities operate in accordance with industry best practices and whether they are open with their donors and stakeholders.  On June 1, 2016, we upgraded our methodology for rating each charity’s’ financial health with CN 2.1. These enhancements further substantiates the financial health of our four star charities.

Table to Table’s exceptional 4-star rating sets it apart from its peers and demonstrates its trustworthiness to the public,” according to Michael Thatcher, President & CEO of Charity Navigator. “Only a quarter of charities rated by Charity Navigator receive the distinction of our 4-star rating. This adds Table to Table to a preeminent group of charities working to overcome our world’s most pressing challenges. Based on its 4-star rating, people can trust that their donations are going to a financially responsible and ethical charity when they decide to support Table to Table.”

“It’s important our donors trust that we’re using their donations wisely to accomplish our mission of rescuing and delivering fresh, nutritious food for our hungry northern New Jersey neighbors in need,” said Ilene Isaacs, Executive Director of Table to Table.  “Our 4-star Charity Navigator rating demonstrates to our supporters our good governance and financial accountability.”

Table to Table’s rating and other information about charitable giving are available free of charge on www.charitynavigator.org.   More-detailed information about Table to Table’s rating is available to Charity Navigator site visitors who become registered users, another free service.

Hasbrouck Heights, NJ  November 29, 2021Table to Table today announced it has been awarded a Major Grant in the amount of $15K from The Provident Bank Foundation to support Table to Table’s Community Fresh Food Rescue Program, which serves those in need throughout northern NJ.

Table to Table was selected to receive the grant based on its goal to help those who are hungry eat healthier, be healthier and enabling them to apply meager funds to other critical needs.

“Although NJ is one of the wealthiest states in the country, 1 in every 4 residents do not earn enough to afford the basic necessities of food and housing,” says Ilene Isaacs, Executive Director of Table to Table. “Thanks to the generosity of funders like The Provident Bank Foundation, Table to Table can rescue more meals to feed even more of our hungry neighbors,” Isaacs concluded.

Hunger existed before the pandemic, but it has been exacerbated and brought to the forefront by the pandemic.  Previously, minimally impacted communities are now supporting long lines of those in need–many for the first time.  Overall, food insecurity in the 4 counties that Table to Table serves has increased from 40-62% 2019 vs 2020 and is even more startling for children, increasing 66-147%.

“We are pleased to help further valuable initiatives put forth by local organizations who are working every day to strengthen the lives of residents in our communities,” said Samantha Plotino, Executive Director, The Provident Bank Foundation. “We will continue to provide support to these important organizations that have identified an immediate need in the community and for the individuals they serve.”

Does food insecurity play a role in health? Yes, quite simply.

If you have read or researched anything in the healthcare space lately, you must have come across Social Determinants of Health. “But, what does it mean,” you might ask? According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), social determinants of health is defined as “the conditions in the environments where people are born, live, learn, work, play, worship, and age that affect a wide range of health, functioning, and quality-of-life outcomes and risks.”

The HHS explains that there are five main categories for these social determinants: Economic stability, education access and quality, neighborhood and built environment, social and community context, and health care access and quality. Although all of the categories outlined above are critical, as a food rescue, Table to Table’s mission rests upon the access of fresh, nutritious food for all. And, we are unique because we deliver wholesome, free food to hundreds of diverse partner agencies who in many cases use the money saved–from not having to purchase food–to often create programs or provide an environment that supports social and community well-being through classes, events, adjunct support and more. So, essentially, Table to Table supports both food and community.

The Brookings Institute explains that, “when it comes to food, access, consumption, and quality are all closely related to life expectancy.” For example, a recent study published in Nutrition found that both increases in healthy food expenditure and decreases in unhealthy food expenditure were associated with increases in life expectancy.” Additionally, the lack of access to wholesome food and food security are also connected to diseases like diabetes, which disproportionately impact African American and Latino communities. Lastly, there is often a geographic component to food insecurity.

As New Jersey’s first and largest food rescue, our mission is to reduce food waste and provide nourishment to our food-insecure neighbors throughout North Jersey. We rescue millions of pounds of fresh food annually that would otherwise be wasted and end up in landfills, contributing to climate change. We deliver it to partner organizations who support the nearly 1 million people in our area who need it most.

Together, we can reduce food waste in our home and make a positive impact on the planet. Every little bit of effort—no matter how small—leads to change.

Table to Table Launches Annual Bag a Lunch, Help a Bunch

Hasbrouck Heights, NJ October 14, 2021 –  Table to Table, New Jersey’s first and solely dedicated community-based food rescue program, kicks off its ever-popular Bag a Lunch, Help a BunchThis grassroots initiative invites individuals, employees in corporations and students in schools to donate what they would spend on lunch for a day, week, month or more to help Table to Table feed those who need it most. Donate Now!

“Many are unaware that 1 in every 4 NJ residents do not earn enough to afford the basic necessities of food and housing,” says Ilene Isaacs, Executive Director of Table to Table. “Bag a Lunch, Help a Bunch is an easy way for individuals, schools and companies to be a part of the solution by donating what they would spend on lunch to help our hungry neighbors,” Isaacs concluded.

Individuals, employees at corporations and students in schools can energize their social networks to host a Bag a Lunch event. Fun competitions among different classes in schools or departments within a corporation, can inspire and engage participants. Also, involvement from different positions in an organization can help bolster the Bag a Lunch, Help a Bunch event.  For instance, schools that involve the principal, PTA, faculty or parent community to support the challenge tend to create a powerful event. And, the team captain can help publicize the event via the school’s website, social media, and invite the Mayor to help kickoff or culminate the activity.

“As a community we have the ability to be a part of the solution to the problem of hunger plaguing so many of our neighbors,” says Isaacs.  “And, from now until December 3, you, your company…and even your child’s school can double your impact with our generous matches,” concludes Isaacs.

For individual donations, the first $15,000 raised will be matched by a former Table to Table trustee! And for donations coming from school teams, any donations raised will be matched up to $30K. The school in Northern NJ that raises the most will receive The Bag a Lunch, Help a Bunch Bernard and Geraldine Segal Foundation Award for Student Philanthropy, which will be promoted through social media and publicity. Hurry, the match deadline is December 3, 2021. To get started on your Bag a Lunch, Help a Bunch event, simply register here, or contact Shahna Sherwood.

Our Impact – The Video Version

I’m Gregory Mueller, the new Chairman of the Board for Table to Table. A year ago I would not have imagined that I would be the volunteer leader of this food rescue program that my family and I have supported over the past 10 years. But with the widespread economic and social disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and the related spike in need for food relief, the work of this organization has grown more critical.

The video you are about to see will give you a flavor of what we do and the scope of the need. I welcome you to join me, ensuring that our fleet of 7 refrigerated trucks continue to bring much needed fresh, nutritious food that without Table to Table would be wasted, to the more than 400,000 people who rely on our no-cost service each day. Although we have already exceeded our 2020 goal of 27 million meals by 42%, there remains demand beyond the 35 million delivered. Working together we can accomplish so much more.
