Chef Michel Nischan

Michel Nischan is a four-time James Beard Award winning chef with over 40 years advocating for a more healthful, sustainable food system. Chef Nischan is an active thought leader encouraging everyone in America to exercise their right to feed themselves and their families well, regardless of race, ethnicity, income, or economic condition.

At the sold-out event, Nischan will be feted by an all-star lineup of toques for the 2022 edition of it Chefs Gala, taking place on Wednesday, September 21st at Edgewood Country Club at 6:30pm. Now in its 22nd year, the chefs will prepare a culinary feast where top chefs and restaurateurs from NYC and NJ prepare a five-course menu just for Table to Table.  The menu also includes curated wines paired with each delicious course. Among the highlights of the annual event is a one-of-a-kind LIVE auction conducted by celebrity auctioneer, Nicholas Lowry (as seen on Antiques Roadshow).

This year’s Table to Table Chefs Gala lineup includes several returnees that have given tirelessly of their time and talent:

Internationally acclaimed celebrity Chef David Burke is a trustee and supporter of Table to Table since its inception 20+ years ago and the 2021 Chefs Gala Honoree. A familiar guest on Top Chef, his awards and honors are too numerable to list. The executive chef of NYC’s legendary River Café at just 26 years of age, Chef Burke has evolved as an author, inventor, and businessman. Known as “The Culinary Prankster” for his artful innovation, Chef Burke currently heads Burke Hospitality Management, which owns and operates numerous award-winning restaurants.

TV personality and James Beard award-winning chef, Rocco DiSpirito, has dedicated his life to proving that healthy and delicious are not mutually exclusive. DiSpirito’s love of food began at a young age, learning from Mama who could make magnificent dishes using only a handful of real foods. By the time he turned 20, Chef DiSpirito was working in the kitchens of legendary chefs around the globe. His 3-Star restaurant, Union Pacific, was a NYC culinary landmark.

For nearly 3 decades, Peter X. Kelly has set the standard for dining in NY State, operating critically acclaimed restaurants in the Hudson Valley. Restaurants in his Xaviars Restaurant Group have all received popular praise and the industry’s most coveted awards and accolades. Featured in numerous national publications, and invited to cook at The James Beard House, Chef Kelly will always be remembered for beating Bobby Flay in Iron Chefs America Battle Cowboy RibEye.

Visionary chef John Mooney promotes sustainability in the kitchens and on the aeroponic rooftop gardens of Bell, Book & Candle in NYC and Bidwell in Washington, DC. As a native of Chicago, John Mooney’s early years were spent absorbing the rich diversity of cultures from the restaurants in his neighborhood. This passion for food not only led him into a career in the culinary arts but also on a quest to explore the deeper connection between organic produce and the consumer.

After receiving a Michelin star and 3-stars in the New York Times for his creative, flavorful cooking at Oceana in NYC, Chef Ben Pollinger opened The Hill, closer to home in Closter, NJ. With credits as an author and frequent guest on national TV shows, Chef Pollinger refined his craft cooking in legendary NYC restaurants La Côte Basque, Les Célébrités, Lespinasse, and worked in kitchen management at Tabla and Union Square Café. Previously recognized as one of NYC’s lead chefs and authorities on all things seafood, Chef Pollinger has always found time for Table to Table both at food & wine events and as a former member of the Board of Trustees.

Acclaimed chef and bestselling author Tom Valenti is a former Table to Table Chefs Gala honoree and currently the Executive Chef of Jockey Hollow Bar & Kitchen. Chef Valenti began working in restaurant kitchens at an early age. After gaining the attention of legendary French chef Guy Savoy, Tom worked at his signature Guy Savoy Restaurant in Paris and later was hired as Sous Chef for Gotham Bar + Grill. Later, Tom teamed up with Alison Becker to open Alison on Dominick, Tom’s breakout opportunity as Executive Chef. Later, he opened his signature restaurant, Ouest and then ‘Cesca. Soon after, Tom became the Executive Chef of Le Cirque.

1776 by David Burke, a new restaurant in Morristown

For the past two years, Table to Table, New Jersey’s first food-rescue organization that serves North Jersey’s hungry, held its much-anticipated, super-delicious fundraiser, dubbed Chefs Gala, online. Instead of coming together to eat, drink and bid for auctioned items to help raise money to feed 460,000 people a year, gala attendees sat home, had their gourmet meals delivered to them, and watched taped speeches on screens and bid via an app.

Not this year.

Come September 21, six acclaimed chefs, among them David Burke of 1776 in Morristown and Ventanas at the Modern in Fort Lee, Tom Valenti of Jockey Hollow Bar & Kitchen in Morristown and Ben Pollinger of The Hill in Closter, will get out their knives and butter their pans to whip up a five-course meal for approximately 250 people who will gather at the Edgewood Country Club in River Vale to help Table to Table do its nourishing work.

“We are thrilled people supported the gala the past two years,” said Ilene Isaacs, executive director. “But there’s nothing like being in person. We love to connect and see old friends and we love to make new friends. The gala is a wonderful way to tell people who we are, and show some of what we do.”

What Table to Table has been doing for the past 23 years is pick up fresh food from supermarket, food distributors, commercial kitchens and restaurants that would otherwise be thrown away and bring the sustenance to organizations that feed the hungry. To date, Table to Table, which serves Essex, Hudson, Bergen and Passaic Counties, has delivered more than 227 million meals and prevented 71,500 tons of food from ending up in landfills.

It hopes that the money the gala raises will pay for 4 million more meals that, Isaacs said “is so needed now in the community,” and adding that the need is exacerbated currently by inflation and the high cost of food.

“For the past couple of years, COVID was the crisis, but the food insecure are still here because of inflation and the relative high cost of living here as compared to other areas,” Isaacs said. “People are really struggling. It may not be as much a hot topic now, but healthy food is the first thing to go (when money is tight).” It is estimated that 2 million people are food insecure in New Jersey.

Every year the gala has a guest of honor. This year it is Michel Nischan, a four-time James Beard Award winning chef and a leader in the Food is Medicine movement. Nischan also founded and partnered with actor Paul Newman to open and run the now-shuttered Dressing Room Restaurant in Westport, CT. Restaurateur Drew Nieporent (Tribeca Grill, Nobu New York City, Nobu Fifty Seven, Nobu London, Nobu Next Door and Bâtard), who was a longtime Ridgewood resident, will bestow the honor.

In addition to Burke, Valenti and Hill, the chefs who will prepare courses are: cookbook author and reality TV personality Rocco DiSpirito; John Mooney of Bell Book & Candle, a restaurant in New York City that gets most of its produce from a roof garden; Peter X. Kelly of award-winning X20 in Yonkers, and Restaurant X in Congers, both in New York; and Anthony Villanueva of the Edgewood Country Club. The wines are coordinated by Carlo Russo Wine & Spirit World in Ho-Ho-Kus.

What’s on the menu: local tuna tartare, slow-roasted Faroe island salmon, goat cheese ravioli, butter-basted filet mignon and key lime pie.

Nearly 30 nonprofits in the Garden State will receive grants from Bank of America to help fund efforts to drive economic opportunity for individuals and families.

BofA – which boasts 11,000 employees in N.J. – announced the awards July 20. According to the financial institution, the grants focus on providing workforce development and education tools to help people start out on the path to employment, and beyond.

They also address needs for ensuring stability, like access to food.

“We’ve chosen to partner with nonprofits that address the most critical issues facing New Jersey, including workforce development, food insecurity, and economic and social progress,” said Alberto Garofalo, president, Bank of America New Jersey. “Our philanthropic investment in these organizations helps us deploy capital locally, where it will have the most impact and build sustainable communities.”

In New Jersey, where the cost of living is notoriously and comparatively high, employment plays a key part in driving economic mobility. And that’s an area where New Jersey is still lagging following the onset of COVID-19. The national unemployment rate is 3.6%. Meanwhile – and though the state has added back more than 95% of jobs lost at the pandemic’s peak in spring 2020 – New Jersey’s was still above that at 3.9%, according to preliminary data released in June 2022.

That’s why Bank of America says it’s focusing on workforce development and educational opportunities in the state – to provide the tools and means to achieve employment.

Since 2017, BofA says it’s provided $30 million to groups in the Garden State as part of its commitment to responsible growth. On top of that, its workers here have contributed their time: 350,000 volunteer hours of it.

The complete list of grant recipients is:

  • America’s Grow-a-Row
  • Community FoodBank of NJ
  • CUMAC Echo
  • Elijah’s Promise
  • Eva’s Village
  • Fulfill
  • Homefront

A New Jersey food rescue program had one of their food delivery trucks stolen, and now, the organization is asking the community for help.

Table to Table is a non-profit that rescues food from going to waste and brings it to other organizations, where its distributed to the food insecure.

The food rescue group had a refrigerated food delivery truck stolen from the overnight parking lot in Lodi early Monday morning.

The organization lost its entire fleet of trucks during Hurricane Ida back in 2021 and has been using rental trucks for a year due to supply issues.

Now, the group is in a tight spot financially paying for new costs on top of rental fees.

They’re asking the surrounding community for help with unexpected expenses so that they can keep feeding those in need.

UPDATE: Eyewitness News has been told the truck has been recovered.

A refrigerated truck stolen from a Bergen County food pantry has been found.

The truck was stolen on Monday from Table to Table’s headquarters in Lodi. It was found in another company’s parking lot on Tuesday.

Table to Table provides meals to people in need throughout northern New Jersey. Hurricane Ida destroyed the organization’s entire fleet of trucks last September. They have been using rental trucks ever since.

“With us, it’s not like, ‘OK, we lose a day of business, profits might be a little lower during the period of time that the truck isn’t there.’ That’s not it. People need to eat, every single day. And without a truck and without our being able to bring that food, in many cases, they can’t,” says executive director Ilene Isaacs.

The truck has water damage because its window was left open during Monday’s rainstorm. The thief abandoned it and hasn’t been caught.

Anyone who may have information is asked to contact the police.

HASBROUCK HEIGHTS, NJ – A Hasbrouck Heights food rescue organization’s truck which was stolen early Monday has been recovered, according to the organization.

The truck was found in a commercial lot in Lodi, according to Maria Sinopoli, Director of Marketing Communications. Aside from some minor damage and a stolen GPS tracking system, the truck will be back up and running and making deliveries, she said.  According to the Lodi Police Department, the investigation is ongoing.

A Table to Table refrigerator delivery truck was stolen from the lot in Lodi early Monday morning at 2:14 am. The discovery was made by the driver. The group is now down to five trucks to deliver food to sites throughout four counties in northern New Jersey.

The operations team is working to ensure that food rescues are being made. This situation comes at a particularly challenging time, as the organization’s entire fleet of trucks was destroyed in the aftermath of Hurricane Ida in September 2021. It was forced to use rental trucks for nearly a year due to supply issues. The group will now incur additional transportation expenses due to the loss.

Table to Table is a community-based food rescue program that collects prepared and perishable food and delivers it to organizations serving the hungry in the Bergen, Essex, Hudson, and Passaic counties of New Jersey.
