Local photographer Jim Nooney, from WashingtonTownship, won Bergen County Camera’s Annual Thanksgiving Holiday Photo Contest with Elusive Treasures of an Autumn Stream, a beautiful image capturing the quintessential colors of fall.  Once again, our friends at Bergen County Camera donated all contest entries to Table to Table.

Saddle River’s Henry Maw is no ordinary 10-year-old. His fun and entertaining iPad app, MonkeyBerry, is now available on iTunes with 20% of the proceeds being earmarked to benefit his charities of choice. “I decided to give back to charities because I knew it was the right thing to do and when people buy the game 20% of the 99 cents will go to charity. I picked a village for orphans in Rwanda, Africa because my dad works with that charity, and I also picked Table to Table which feeds the hungry because my mom works with them. I feel great about giving back and my whole family does.”

Now, Henry and his family are taking the idea a step further. They’ve developed a website – Apps For Impact – at www.apps4impact.com – to promote app developers and sellers who have a social impact or donate a portion of their sales or profits to social and philanthropic causes.

Bergen County Camera introduces Portfolio 2, a spectacular compilation of stunning images by photographers Bob Krist, Michael Massaia, Peter Liepke, Mel DiGiacomo and Lucien Flotte.  Portfolio 2 celebrates the 12th anniversary of Gallery Two Seventy and the 30th anniversary of Bergen County Camera.  “Photography is the quintessential reflective medium, both in the thoughts it provokes and in the act of capturing light reflected off life’s many, varied surfaces,” says curator Tom Gramegna. “Screen-viewed images will never replace images printed on reflective media. Owning this Portfolio of rare and beautiful photographs gives you an instant image collection with which to reflect on the fine art of this ensemble of brilliantly talented image makers.” A portion of the sale of Portfolio 2 will benefit Table to Table.  Preview it here.

Shopping at Whole Foods is always fun but on a 5% Day, it’s taken to an exciting new level. On October 12, our friends at Whole Foods will help us kick off our annual “Bag a Lunch” initiative with a signature Whole Foods event – a 5% Day. Whole Foods Markets in Edgewater, Montclair, Ridgewood, Paramus and West Orange will donate 5% of the day’s net sales to Table to Table’s Bag a Lunch program. So start making those shopping lists and be sure to tell your friends. Remember, when you buy food for your table on October 12, you’re helping to put food on the table for a hungry neighbor too.

For the past four years, Table to Table has partnered with Newark Mayor Cory Booker to deliver one million meals to Newark each year. Recently, Mayor Booker and Table to Table driver Edgar Brieva celebrated the success of this initiative in front of Newark’s Goodwill Rescue Mission. Table to Table’s goal to extend services to Essex County is on track, with a team of volunteers working to identify food sources and corporate sponsors in the area.  For more information about the Essex Initiative contact Linda Senter at lsenter@tabletotable.org

Hurricane Irene and the non-stop rain that followed in her path took us all by surprise but we’re proud to report that we were able to continue serving the hardest-hit areas in Passaic County and Newark less than 24 hours after the storm. Though many of our food donors were closed because they had no electricity, all five of our trucks were on the road on Monday morning, picking up whatever food they could and delivering it to as many agencies as could accept it. Our drivers worked long hours, sat in nightmarish traffic – but managed during the two weeks of the hurricane and the rain-soaked aftermath to deliver over ¼ million meals – including food for the relief volunteers who were working 24/7 cleaning up the disaster. Kudos to our amazing drivers, who give new meaning to the words dedication and excellence!
